Waugh & Orwell

Troy Patterson,"Brideshead Revisited Revisited," Slate, 25 July, argues that Evelyn Waugh is"the greatest comic novelist of the last 100 years," but that his Brideshead Revisited is"a misfit of a book, much loved, and often loved in the wrong way, as the vomitous stupidity of Miramax's new film adaptation attests."

Eric Ormsby,"Against the Day," NY Sun, 30 July, reviews David Lebedoff's The Same Man: George Orwell & Evelyn Waugh in Love and War. It seems unlikely.

The Orwell Prize site announces that it will launch publication of George Orwell's diaries on-line today.* Like the highly successful The Diary of Samuel Pepys, the Orwell diaries are to appear in daily blog format. In the meantime, Paul K. Lyons,"When DID Orwell start a diary?" The Diary Junction Blog, 29 July, has some questions about the project.
*There's some confusion as to the launch, because it's said to be in honor of the"70th anniversary" which the site says isn't until August 9. Hat tip.
