On the other hand ...

My colleague, KC Johnson, makes a reasonably persuasive case that gender biases were not a large obstacle to Hillary Clinton's presidential ambitions. (See also: Derek Catsam and Gil Troy) The Women's Media Center, however, has put together these clips of crude sexism in the mainstream American media.

I'd argue, though, that the difference between the two campaigns is that Obama's campaign never directly engaged in sexism, while Geraldine Ferraro, Bill Clinton, and other Clinton advisors actively pushed various racist memes against Obama throughout the campaign.

I'd disagree with KC that sexism played no role in Hillary's defeat, but I do think it wasn't helped along by Obama. I wish I could say the same about Hillary and racism.
