VERMONT TOWN CONSIDERING SECESSION

Well, I guess this is something of a historical irony. It's certainly not everyday that you see New Englanders linking secession to the ideas of the Founders and colonial times. I thought that troublesome little idea got lost somewhere back during the 1860s, you know during another famous"armed insurrection type thing" (to use VT's Secretary of State's peculiar turn of phrase).

It's also worth noting that the attempted secession of well-known resort towns in Vermont can't be good news for Howard Dean's presidential campaign.

The prevailing winds of free flowing capital and contract, the weakness of real tradition and the fall from popularity of either compromise or gracious defeat suggest to me that this little contremps is just the beginning. Confederacy is the direction we're going, but we're not stopping there. Feudalism: all relationships negotiated contracts based on personal benefit and power; the failure of public law in favor of private agreement and the fall of moral suasion before applied force.

This has nothing to do with founders, except that they're a convenient stopping place on the way back to the middle ages.....
