New perspectives on how history is made

Marshall professor turns history into an app

History can be right at your fingerprints with a new app and website developed at Marshall University.

Clio, named after the ancient Greek muse of history, uses your present location to guide you to landmarks, museums and historic sites.

“Clio is, basically, Yelp for history and culture,” said Dr. David Trowbridge, associate professor of history and director of African-American Studies at Marshall University.

He developed the app and website which, in addition to directing people to physical locations, serves as a virtual time machine — letting users see images and videos and hear and read about historic events that happened around them.

Currently, there are 4,000 Clio entries nationwide.
