Re-thinking Booker T. Washington
I'm a guest blogger this week at the TPM Cafe Book Club, part of TalkingPointsMemo.com. The topic is Robert J. Norrell's reinterpretation of Booker T. Washington, Up from History. The other invited bloggers are Ralph Luker and Joseph Lowndes. So far, these two are pretty restrained in their critique of Norrell's sympathetic portrait, but I think the lid may blow.

From that review, I see very little interpretatively that we did not discuss in our brief pages about Washington in American Statesmen on Slavery and the Negro (1971), a Conservative Book Club selection, which Choice the Librarians Journal, selected as one of the Ten Outstanding History Books of that year.
