Carole Emberton teaches history at the University at Buffalo (SUNY). Her first book, "Beyond Redemption: Race, Violence, and the American South after the Civil War" will be published in June by the University of Chicago Press. She is currently at work on a cultural biography of Samuel Colt and the American gun industry in the nineteenth century.
